Description

JCCC’s Multicultural Programming Advisory Council (MPAC) is hosting a Panel discussion on Monday, February 6th from noon- 1 pm focusing on the death of Tyre Nichols and the relationship between police and minorities for JCCC Students.

The purpose of our conversation is to discuss the recent tragic incident regarding the assault and resulting death of Memphis resident Tyre Nichols. Tyre was stopped by law enforcement for a possible traffic violation. His brutal beating mirrors more prominent, longstanding social and cultural issues that specifically create negative outcomes for African American males in encounters with law enforcement, regardless of the race of the law enforcement officials. We aim to present a diverse panel to discuss the sociological, historical, political, and legal ramifications.

Students can submit questions to the panelist in advance here.

Lastly, we ask panelists to share ideas with the students about "How to survive" these encounters and what to do afterward.

Confirmed Panelist: JCCC PD Chief Gregory Russell, Lenexa PD Chief Dawn Layman, AAGJC Educator Haile Sims & Criminal Justice Dept Chair Frank Galbrecht
