Description

A Conversation about Quindaro, in celebration of Black History Month!

Join MPAC in this conversation between Rev. Stacy Evans and Tai Edwards (Kansas Studies Institute Director) about efforts to preserve Quindaro's history. Quindaro was a Wyandot, abolitionist, and African American community along the Missouri river in territorial Kansas (1850s).Thereafter it became home to Western University, the first historically Black college or university (HBCU), west of the Mississippi River, and the only one to ever operate in Kansas. Today, Quindaro is part of Kansas City, Kansas. After decades of local activism, Congress declared Quindaro townsite a National Commemorative Site in 2018. And just this fall, community members (including JCCC staff, faculty, and students) worked to clean and clear the old ruins to make them more accessible.
